Closed Position: Federated Data Infrastructure Engineer at NCSR "Demokritos"
The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at NCSR "Demokritos" invites applications for a technical deployment and research role as a Research Associate – Data Lab, Dataspace Deployment based in Agia Paraskevi, Attica, Greece
About the Job Research Associate – Data Lab, Dataspace Deployment
About the Role This is a technical deployment and research role within the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at NCSR "Demokritos" You will participate in the end-to-end deployment of two tightly coupled components: • A Data Lab: the operational interface that curates, enriches, and provisions AI-ready datasets to model development pipelines • Demokritos Dataspace: a FAIR-compliant, connector-based data governance node serving as the test case for interoperability with Common European Data Spaces
Data Labs are a concept introduced in the EU's Apply AI Strategy (2025) and Data Union Strategy (2025); the first deployments are happening now, inside AI Factories You will contribute to defining what this infrastructure looks like in practice — and document it for replication across the European AI Factory network
What You Will Do Data Lab • Design and deploy AI-readiness pipelines: ingestion, quality assessment, labelling, versioning, FAIR-compliant provisioning • Build and maintain data APIs connecting curated datasets to Pharos HPC/AI compute environments • Integrate and evaluate open-source dataset management and ML pipeline tools (DVC, MLflow, Hugging Face datasets, or equivalent) • Prototype synthetic data generation for restricted or sensitive datasets
Demokritos Dataspace • Deploy the Demokritos Dataspace using IDS/Eclipse Dataspace Components (EDC) or comparable connector architecture • Implement AAI/IAM, data usage policy enforcement, and catalogue services • Execute an interoperability test programme establishing the Dataspace as a functioning node in the wider European dataspace ecosystem • Maintain alignment with DSSC reference architecture and EOSC Federation data exchange protocols
Integration, Infrastructure • Design the clean interface between Dataspace governance and Data Lab AI-readiness services • Implement containerised, reproducible deployments (Docker, Kubernetes) for all components • Produce architecture documentation, operational runbooks, and replication guidelines
Dissemination • Contribute to scientific publications documenting deployment findings
Who We Are Looking For Required Qualifications Please do not apply if you cannot demonstrate all of the following: • MSc in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Distributed Systems, or equivalent • Hands-on experience building or managing AI/ML data pipelines (not just model training — data lifecycle, versioning, curation) • Practical DevOps proficiency: Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD in a real deployment context • Working knowledge of data API standards and interoperability frameworks: REST APIs, FAIR principles, DCAT metadata • Ability to produce clear technical documentation and contribute to scientific writing in English
Highly Valued Qualifications - Not required, but will differentiate your application: • Experience with dataspace connector technologies: Eclipse Dataspace Components (EDC), IDS protocol, or GAIA-X frameworks • Familiarity with EOSC services, EGI Federation infrastructure, or federated AAI • Knowledge of EU data governance frameworks: Data Governance Act, Data Act, GDPR in data infrastructure contexts • Experience with Common European Data Spaces (health, environment, mobility, or industrial) • Contributions to open-source projects relevant to data infrastructure
The right candidate is comfortable working at the boundary between research and engineering, producing deployable infrastructure and publishable findings from the same work
What We Offer • Central role in a strategically significant EU initiative at a formative phase • Supervised research environment with structured publication opportunities • Engagement with EU Data and AI communities • Access to Pharos AI Factory and a broad European research network
Position Details: • Contract: Fixed-term (renewable) • Start: [1/9/2026]
